The Burleigh Pro Surfing Event on the Gold Coast

Burleigh Heads is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and the surf here is consistently awesome. Apart from occasionally hosting the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro events when conditions don’t hold up elsewhere, Burleigh hosts its own major annual competition by way of the Breaka Burleigh Pro. In February 2012, this lively event kicked off the prestigious Australian leg of the world surfing tour, keeping Burleigh firmly established on the world surfing map and making it the place for the world’s best to set the standard for the rest of the year. The following is a brief look at the Breaka Burleigh Pro event.

Who competes?

Everyone. Most notably, some of Queensland’s and Australia’s surfing heroes with Mick Fanning, Julian Wilson, Brett Simpson, Adam Melling, Josh Kerr, Bede Durbidge and even former world champion Mark Occhilupo among those there this year. Local surfer Kyle Robinson was also granted a wild-card entry after winning a local online voting competition.

Where to stay?

There is nothing like being on the beach to see it all first hand. If you want to come and watch next year’s event, it won’t be hard to find a place to stay, as there are all types of holiday accommodation in Burleigh Heads and across the Gold Coast. Whether you’re looking for hostels or luxury accommodation on the Gold Coast, you have a huge amount of options within walking distance from where all the action will be at Burleigh. Be sure to book early though, as the Gold Coast sees more tourists in the summer than almost any other part of the world, and hotels are regularly totally booked out. Booking early will give you far more options too, and you may even be able to get a place where you can see some of the action from where you’re staying. The views here among the best you could find from any of the holiday apartments on the Gold Coast.

Who puts it on

Very, very good people! Seriously, without help, awesome events like these simply would not happen, so thanks should be given to the huge amount of time and effort that people put into the effort, as well as all of those who support financially. Some of the main sponsors of the Breaka Burleigh Pro are Breaka Flavoured Milk, Events Queensland, Surfing Queensland, ASP Australasia, Channel 7, Nova 106.9 FM, SEA FM, Australia’s Surfing Life, GCCC, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, JR Surfboards, 5 and a Half Sunglasses and Air Asia.

2012 Winner

Julian Wilson took home the title in 2012, defeating fellow Queenslander and former world champion Mick Fanning in the final. Wilson showed off some remarkable aerial skills to overcome Fanning in a competitive final.
